Happy harvest moon, thanksgiving, halloween, and happy autumn! I’ve never really “celebrated” autumn before but this time I’ve been seeing everybody embracing the fall atmosphere and wanted to enjoy it. Perhaps it is because of the media and activities I participate in. For example, I only started getting into home interior decoration this year. Of course, that includes this website, my “home” on the internet.
Update: I didn’t have enough to talk about and spent so long making this post that it is now winter. Happy christmas lol.
Sysadmin Nonsense
I am out of azure credits after exactly one year. Luckily I’ve switched to another server provider Racknerd that is cheap and offers a good amount of bandwidth. Come to think of it, the yearly costs for nievespace are:
- 3.5$ for the domain name
- 11$ for the reverse proxy/VPS and public IP address
- about 4$ of electricity
- probably at least 10 hours of time, mostly checking github or matrix when something breaks, reporting issues, applying the fix before it gets officially merged
An update on imported services: proxigram, proxitok, and quetre are not working, probably due to them being abandoned. Piped doesn’t seem to be keeping up with new issues appearing, and almost all of the popular instances are down. Despite being a popular project with thousands of stars, development is very slow. It seems like the ratio of users to contributors for open source software is something like 100k to 1. Of course, proxigram never really worked in the first place, it just rescrapes data from other instagram scrapers. And proxitok is written in PHP so it’s understandable why no one wants to read the code 🐒.
Update: I’ve decided to remove proxigram permanantly for the reasons above.
I am looking to increase my server’s storage to backup my data and maybe run a monero node. The problem is, no laptops have hard drive slots these days, so I would have to move to a desktop, which would also require a monitor, mouse, keyboard, battery, a desk to put everything on, and even a chair. So the space required goes from a laptop sitting on a shelf to several square meters of floor space. What I want is a laptop-style peripheral that I can quickly pull out and plug into the server whenever I need physical access. But for now I’ll stick with my old laptop and plug in external hard drives over usb. (Has anyone else had this problem? Advice would be appreciated here.)
Other personal stuff:
If you have a bathroom with one of those corner shower enclosures, typically there is a glass or plastic door that opens and does not go all the way to the ceiling. Turns out, the frame of enclosure is actually quite strong. It’s a great place to do pullups.
Also I’ve been learning how to create cute patterns using steamed milk, but it is hard and I can only drink so much milk every week. Maybe if someone visits I will serve them a poorly made cup of hot chocolate or milk tea :pkhey:
Yarn search
Yarn is so expensive! I made a script to scrape several online stores for yarns and collects information such as weight, composition, and importantly price per mass, so you can filter for these factors and focus on choosing a good color and quality. After running the script, the results are stored in a database; I was going to create a user interface for searching, but then I realized DB Browser for SQLite supports all the functions I need and some I wouldn’t be bothered to implement.
Looking forward to go skating, skiing, and look at pretty lights as we head into winter. Hopefully the snow will stay consistent again and I can build an igloo. Have a great rest of the year!
